Wealthy Apple and Apple-Jalapeno Preserves Recipe

The wealthy apple is a "memory" apple. Many folks come in looking for this apple because they remember their grandma or mother baking with it. It makes my heart happy that we can help those people relive some of the memories of their loved ones.

Approximate Ripening Date: August 27th


Flavor: This apple has a balanced tart flavor. Can be used for fresh eating but especially good for cooking.


Baking: This apple doesn't mush down completely but it also doesn't hold it's shape. It's right in the middle. It is particularly beloved for making applesauce.


History: Cherry Crab x Sops of Wine cross developed in Minnesota, 1861. It's hte first apple developed by Peter Gideon who then went on to create the breeding program at the University of Minnesota.

Apple-Jalapeno Preserves


5 c sugar 2 c water 8 c chopped apples 1 1/2 c chopped jalapenos 1/4 t citric acid 1 T powdered pectin

Bring water and sugar to boil, stirring often. Cook, uncovered for 5 minutes. Add peppers, apples and citric acid. Return to boil. Stir in pectin and boil 1 minute. Put into prepared 1/2 pint jars and process in boiling water bath 10 minutes. Makes 6 half pints.
